The winner of the 2014 People’s Choice Award was Blueberry Ash by Anita West. The People’s Choice Award is non-acquisitive and awarded at the end of the exhibition. The winner received $500 donated by the Friends of the Cowra Regional Art Gallery.
My studio backs on to a large bushland reserve and tidal creek. Everyday I walk, take notes, draw and observe. The bush is full of ironbark, paperbark, and ghost gum with grevilleas, banksias, native grasses, and young eucalypt saplings randomly scattered in the undergrowth.
I drink in the smell of eucalyptus, the grey greens of the gum leaves, the delicate whites of tiny flowers, the intriguing calligraphy on the scribbly bark, and I am drawn back to the romance of my childhood riding horses and wandering through the bush. I love the landscape of this country, the optimism I feel when I am immersed in it and the pure sensory pleasure I get from walking through the Australian bush.
